The origin story
Built from the
birthplace of coffee.
Ethiopia gave the world coffee. AENKU gives the world the intelligence to understand it matched to your biology, your rhythms, and your goals.
One person. One mission. Coffee that finally works for you.
Aenku began with one question: why does the same coffee make one person feel amazing and another feel anxious? I'm Micheal Ketema, and I'm building the answer.
My mission is simple. To transform the world's most popular ritual into its most powerful health tool. Aenku uses AI powered health coffee matching to turn standard caffeine consumption into a data driven path toward peak physical and mental performance.
Coffee was never rushed here.
I grew up watching coffee be treated like a ritual. In Ethiopia, it still is. The jebena sits on hot coals, the room fills with frankincense, and three rounds are poured: abol, tona, baraka, each one slightly weaker, each one meaningful. Nobody rushes it. Nobody drinks it wrong.
Then I watched the rest of the world do exactly that.
I watched people pour the darkest roast they could find into an empty stomach at 6am and wonder why they were anxious by 8. I watched people drink coffee all afternoon and blame themselves for not sleeping. I watched people abandon coffee entirely, convinced it was not for them, when really, they just had the wrong cup, at the wrong time.
I started asking a question that felt almost too simple: what if coffee worked differently for different people?
It does. The science is real. How quickly your body metabolizes caffeine, when your cortisol peaks, how your sleep architecture responds, whether your gut handles natural process beans or needs washed, these are biological facts, not preferences. And yet nobody had built a tool that used these facts to give a person their actual answer. Not a trending recommendation. Not what works for the person with the most Instagram followers.
Rare, not expensive. Precise.
The name comes from a word in Amharic. Not rare like expensive. Rare like precise. Like something made only for you.
Built from Addis Ababa.
I built Aenku from Addis Ababa, from the country where coffee was born, with a belief that the birthplace of coffee should also be the place where coffee intelligence is born. Aenku is not a Silicon Valley startup that stumbled into coffee as a category. I am trying to have enough knowledge about AI to build something our own community deserved first.
Spreadsheets. WhatsApp. One question nobody was asking.
It started with spreadsheets, WhatsApp, and Telegram conversations. My initial business goal was simply to tap into the market for roasted Ethiopian coffee. But I quickly realized the market was completely saturated.
What surprised me most was that nobody, on either the consumer or the supplier side, was asking the most important question: what is the best fit for that specific person?
So I started asking people questions myself. I asked about their sleep, their energy levels, and their morning routines, and began manually matching them to the exact coffee beans I knew would fit their life.
One profile at a time.
Aenku is still small. It is still one person deeply committed to one idea, that everybody deserves a coffee that was figured out for them, not marketed at them. I am building this one profile at a time, from a city that has been getting coffee right for a thousand years.
Am just making it personal.
The problem is almost never the coffee.
Here is what nobody tells you about coffee. The problem is almost never the coffee. It is the mismatch.
Your body has a chronotype, a natural rhythm that governs when you are alert, when you need support, and when stimulation becomes interference. Most people drink coffee according to habit, not biology. They drink it when they wake up, which is often exactly when their cortisol is already at its highest. They drink it in the afternoon, which is often when their body needs it, but too late for their sleep window. They drink the same bean every day, when their body's needs shift with seasons, stress, and sleep quality.
Coffee intelligence is not about single origin pour overs and altitude scores. It is about asking. When does your body actually need this? What form of caffeine release suits your energy pattern? What process and roast works with your digestion?
Research from institutions like the NIH and the Sleep Research Society has consistently shown that caffeine timing relative to individual circadian rhythms can determine whether it enhances performance or disrupts it. The same 200mg dose that sharpens one person's focus puts another into a low grade anxiety spiral, not because of the caffeine itself, but because of the context of their body at that moment.
Our Wellness Engine uses your unique profile, including your schedule, your sensitivity, and your goals, to build a research backed model of your relationship with caffeine. It returns something no general recommendation can, a coffee relationship that actually fits your life.
This is why I built it. Not because coffee needed to be disrupted. But because too many people were being failed by a one size fits all approach to something that was never, by nature, one size fits all.
I am just teaching that knowledge to an algorithm, and giving it back to the world.
